Researchers cited Portales’s strong income per capita, short commuting times, low taxes, and highly educated populace as the primary characteristics that factored into its elite ranking.
Just north of Portales is the famous Blackwater Draw, a landmark archaeological site where the oldest North American human tools were unearthed in 1929 and have been dated to about 13,500 years ago. The Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art shows work from the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program. By contrast, the Roswell Museum & Art Center focuses on southwestern art.
